Does My Business Qualify?

The West Virginia Small Business Plan is designed to bring uninsured adult workers into the overall pool of persons who have comprehensive health coverage. Large numbers of the uninsured are working for small businesses.

Three business people look at computerFive criteria must be met for a small business to be considered eligible for reduced premium rates under the Plan. These were defined in Senate Bill 143, which created the Small Business Plan, and through rules and regulations mandated by the Offices of the West Virginia Offices of the Insurance Commissioner.

Participating insurance companies may have additional stipulations that are pertinent to their coverage plans and underwriting policies. Remember – rates and any additional stipulations must be obtained from a local insurance agent who is selling coverage under the Small Business Plan. Final decisions, by the employer and employees, can be made after weighing all the options presented by the chosen agent.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for the Small Business Plan. the answer must be "Yes" to each question.

  •  Are there 2 - 50 employees?
  •  Has the business been without a company-sponsored health insurance plan for at least the past 12 consecutive months?
  •  Has the business been in operation for at least one year?
  •  Will a minimum of 75 percent of the eligible employees sign up for the plan?
  •  Will the employer pay at least 50 percent of the cost of individual coverage?
